Gogol Bordello Detroit reviews
Awesome, but odd volume choice for Metallica
I attended the show with high expectations of it being extremely loud, and it certainly was. The bands Volbeat and Avenged Sevenfold provided the typical rock/metal volume, ensuring that your ears would be ringing for days. Gogol Bordello, for reasons I still can't comprehend, was at least 25% louder, which was at times downright agonizing. As a long-time metal enthusiast, I have a good sense of what constitutes an acceptable level of volume, and this was not it. Consequently, Gogol Bordello's performance suffered due to this excessive volume. Despite their talent, they had the poorest sound quality of the three bands that evening. The setup at SunTrust was fantastic, and I was fortunate to have Lexus Level seats positioned almost directly center-stage. It is undeniably a fantastic venue for watching and listening to a performance. I plan to return for future events at this location. The staff, on the whole, were very courteous and accommodating, although there were a few ushers who seemed overly enthusiastic about their authority over the concert attendees. This brought back memories of Turner Field and the Braves' promises of 'improved usher experiences' at SunTrust Park, which turned out to be a group of older, mostly white ushers behaving in a similar manner. Most were pleasant, but some were not. This was my third time seeing Gogol Bordello, and while they didn't quite reach the heights of my previous experiences, it was still an enjoyable evening. If given the opportunity to see Avenged Sevenfold or Volbeat, don't hesitate - they were both outstanding.
